Contact lens wearers are particularly familiar with this: their eyes burn and itch. Often, however, it is not the mechanical friction of the lenses that is to blame, but rather a change in the tear film on the eye. But even without contact lenses, the tear film is often the cause of burning or itchy eyes.
The tear film as a cause
It is something like the natural "lubricant" between the eye and eyelid, it cleans and moistens the eye and dries it before it dries out. It also supplies the eye with oxygen and nutrients. We also need our tear film to protect ourselves from external attacks: in the best case scenario, pathogens are simply washed away by it. In addition, it even contains substances that actively fight certain germs and thus provide additional protection for the eye. But how exactly is the tear film made up? And what can you do if it itches and stings? We asked Dr. Richard Püschner.
